Antique silver from Scotland, Ireland, England or the former Colonies provided it is well-made, free from repairs and otherwise unblemished, you will find it at Schredds. This site publicises related research snippets that emerge when we study the pieces we buy. These snippets are the product of work by Pursuivant Research, who undertake historical and genealogical research to order.
We try to buy the interesting, the unusual, and outstanding examples of the ordinary whenever and wherever we can find them we often need to research their provenance and even their function. Luke , our research department, will consult his memory (prodigious), his library (vast) and the Internet. In his spare time, he writes papers, short and long, some of which can be found here. After any necessary research, the pieces go up on our website.
Antique silver makes an ideal gift suitable for a godchild, an anniversary, and to grace your host's dining table. We have any number of examples for the serious collector anything from early spoons, to antique objects with unusual uses which are often obscure to us moderns.
Each antique displayed on our site is warranted genuine, without defect (unless marked a.f.), and representative of the best that Scottish, Irish and English smiths could make in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. We have little from the 20th century: we do not keep Sheffield plate, electroplate or 19th century American pieces.
Before shipping any item, we email a full condition report. You can also ring our video-Skype line to discuss the piece and see it from all angles.
Antique silver is very photogenic and all pieces are illustrated (unless I had a senior moment!). You will find the web-site divided into a number of sections though any of the 1000 odd antiques we have in stock at any time may not be in the section where you expect to find them. So come and see us if you can and use the search-engine if you cannot!
It will find any item on our main site, either by any word in the description, by stock-number, year of manufacture or any other descriptive sequence of letters or numerals you may specify. More detailed instructions appear on the search-engine page.
